On June 5, 2013, twelve students, along with Biology Professor Barbara Nicholson and Muriel Miller from the Visual Arts Dept had the opportunity to develop and apply skills in art and biology in the beautiful landscapes of coastal Ireland and the Lake District National Park in UK. Students painted and drew the natural rocky coastal setting while biology students did field studies of the areas distinctive flowers, fossils and birds. Students also visited the Aran Islands.
The Lake District, England’s largest National Park is a landscape of low mountains, pastureland, lakes and streams where students in Art rendered the special sense of place of these beautiful landscapes. Art students used many types of media to develop skills of perception and technical abilities in their chosen field. Some did drawings, and others used acrylic or watercolors while studying the juxtapositions of forms and colors in natural environments. Students visited John Ruskin’s Studio and also Beatrix Potter’s home. Biology students studied animal behavior, plant growth forms and ecological interrelationships. Combined art critiques and biology presentations provided a forum for students to discuss their work and receive suggestions and ideas to develop their work.
Artwork produced from this trip will be shown in the Shafer first floor showcases at the beginning of the Fall semester. We are also doing another Course Abroad to Ireland, England and Wales in the first summer session of 2014, June 5-July 1st. For information students can email Muriel Miller at Millermu@easternct.edu
