Emergency Procedures

This Emergency Crisis Plan Guide provides a quick reference for University administrators, faculty, staff, and students on the essentials to cope with most campus emergencies. Although the guide does not cover every conceivable situation, it does supply the basic administrative guidelines.

FOR ALL EMERGENCIES DIAL 911

Bomb Threats
Dial 911.
Attempt to keep the caller on the line.
Notify your immediate supervisor.
Do not touch or move any suspicious item.
The decision to evacuate will be made by the University Police.
Hostage Situation
Dial 911.
If taken hostage, be patient and cooperative.
Speak only when spoken to.
Be observant.
Try to rest.
Wait for any Police instructions.
  
Chemical or Radiation Spills
Vacate the affected area.
Dial 911.
When reporting a spill, be specific on the nature of material involved.
If contaminated by a spill, avoid contact with others.
Medical and First Aid
Dial 911.
Give name, location and the nature of medical incident.
Provide first aid care, if trained
  
Civil Disturbance or Demonstrations
Dial 465-5310 - University Police.
Avoid going to the location of disturbances or disorderly demonstrations.
Please follow instructions issued by the University Police.
Psychological Crisis
Dial 911-if immediate threat or the
University Police, 465-5310, if not an immediate threat.
Do not try to handle any situation you feel is dangerous on your own.
Contact your immediate supervisor, hall director, or resident assistant.
  
Evacuation Procedures
When an alarm is sounded, leave via the nearest exit.
Walk quickly - DO NOT RUN.
1. Assist individuals with disabilities if you can.
2. Direct individuals to Areas of Refuge if they cannot leave the building or have them remain in the class.
3. Notify 1st Responders of the location of anyone left in the building.
4. Individuals with disabilities should use 911 to report their location in an emergency.
Go to designated areas as directed by University personnel.
DO NOT RETURN TO THE BUILDING until authorized by the Police.
Severe Weather
Dial Weather Hot Line: (860) 465-4444 or 5444 from a campus phone.
or (1-800-578-1449).
  
Explosions - Aircraft Crashes
Get out of the area or take immediate cover.
If in a building, pull the fire alarm and evacuate.
Dial 911.
Utility Failure
Dial 465-5310 - University Police.
Notify your immediate supervisor.
Wait for instructions.
Cease from using all electrical equipment.
Do not switch on/off light switches.
  
Fire
Activate building alarm
Evacuate building by walking quickly to nearest exit
Alert others on your way out
Assist individuals with disabilities to exit
DO NOT USE ELEVATORS
Move at least 500' away from the building
Dial 911
DO NOT RETURN TO THE BUILDING until authorized by the Police.
Violent or Criminal Behavior
Dial 911 - if there is an immediate threat.
Give the nature of incident, location, any descriptions,
weapons, injuries, or property damage to the Police.
If gun fire is heard, get out if you can or take immediate cover.
  
Work Place Violence
Dial 911 - if you or others are in danger or contact the
University Police at 465-5310, if there is no immediate threat.
Notify your supervisor IMMEDIATELY
