Audition Process

All applicants wishing to enroll at Eastern as a Music Major must complete the following:

  1. Fulfill all general admissions guidelines as outlined here by the Office of Admissions.  Please make sure you are a fully admitted student (with acceptance letter in hand) prior to completing the audition request form below.
    Students wishing to transfer into any degree program at Eastern should follow the admission guidelines as stated here. All transfer students seeking to declare a major in music must appear for an in-person interview and audition. Transfer students from another Connecticut State University or Connecticut Community College can click here for more information regarding the transfer of credits to Eastern.
  2. Complete an Audition Request Form
  3. Complete a performance hearing and in-person interview with members of the Music Program faculty:
    Performance Hearing:
    Please come prepared with two selections or movements in contrasting styles. Although there is no assigned repertoire list, please choose selections that demonstrate your ability to accurately perform basic fundamentals associated with one’s instrument or voice such as clear and focused tone quality, an understanding of the interpretation of musical line, accurate rhythm and good intonation. If you are unsure of your abilities or uncertain about how to correctly prepare, please contact us at musicauditions@easternct.edufor guidance and assistance. We would be happy to help!
    Informational Interview:
    You will have a chance to speak with music faculty in their specific field of interest and ask questions about the program and opportunities available to you at Eastern. This will also be a time for faculty to get to learn more about your background and area(s) of interest and will help us advise you better.

Audition FAQs

Can I audition for the Music Program and then apply for admission to Eastern? No. You must be a fully admitted student and have official documentation of your admission from the Eastern Connecticut State University Office of Admissions before scheduling and performing an audition for the Music Program faculty.

Is there specific repertoire or technique such as scales required for my audition? No.  Please come prepared with two selections in contrasting styles that demonstrate your level of proficiency on your instrument. We suggest that you choose repertoire that show your level of achievement and highlight the range of your abilities.  If you are unsure of your abilities or uncertain about how to correctly prepare, please contact us at musicauditions@easternct.edufor guidance and assistance.

Is there a keyboard proficiency requirement as part of the audition process? No. Students who become Music Majors are required to demonstrate a level of keyboard proficiency prior to graduation.  A list of required skills.  If you feel that you have sufficient background to pass the exam based on previous study, you can request to take the exam on the day of your audition. Contact musicauditions@easternct.edu for more information.

Do I need to bring an accompanist or will one be provided? Feel free to bring your own accompanist, however the Music Program will have a pianist available to play for your audition.

I see that you offer concentrations in Music Theory/Electronic Music/Composition and Global Perspectives in Music History and Criticism. Do I still need to do a voice or instrumental audition if I’m interested in one of these programs? Yes.  As all Music Majors are required to participate in a large ensemble, you need to be able to demonstrate your musicianship skills and abilities to contribute to the vocal and instrumental ensembles. If you are unsure of your abilities or uncertain about how to correctly prepare, please contact us at musicauditions@easternct.edu for guidance and assistance.

I want to Minor in Music/My major requires me to have a minor. Although there is no audition for the Music Minor, please note there is a large ensemble requirement in the Music Minor, therefore those wishing to minor in music need to demonstrate musicianship skills and abilities on an instrument or voice. Please see the audition information regarding the Music Major as the music courses are the same curriculum. If you are unsure of your abilities, please contact us at musicauditions@easternct.edu for guidance and assistance.

Do I need to send a recording to be considered for an in-person audition? No. We have no pre-screening requirement. All interested applicants will receive an in-person audition time on one of the audition dates listed above.

I cannot make any of the audition dates listed, can I submit a recording? Please email musicauditions@easternct.edu for more information on how to complete the audition process if you are not able to be present on campus.

I’ve completed the online form and requested an audition.  When will I receive more information? Immediately following your submission you should receive an automated email confirming that we have received your audition request and a confirmation of one of the days your requested.  Approximately four weeks prior to the audition date, you will receive an email with more information including a schedule for the day and a specific time of your informational interview and audition.

I need to change my audition date! What do I do? Please contact musicauditions@easternct.edu to make any changes to your requested audition date or program of interest.
